New Features! Wahoo!

Hi to my two lovely, smart, sexy readers. You’ve given me a chance to entertain and inform you, and now I’m going to tell you exactly how that will happen.

~The Daily WTF
This will be a regular feature highlighting something ridiculous that I see on the Internet. My goal is to make you shout out loud, “WHAT THE F**K.”

~Mayo’s Spread
This will be a short bit with my thoughts on the news of the day.

~Quick Hitters
My daily roundup of stories you absolutely have to check out.

~Why You Should Care
Too often, news is spewed at you with no real perspective as to why it matters to your life other than to say “holy shit” or “wow, that sucks.” I’ll help you break it down.

What do I have that every other schmuck on the Internet doesn’t have? Well, I’ve got years of broadcasting experience under my belt (which to many people means nothing...but at least I know how things work on the inside) and I have a tendency to swear a lot which should keep things interesting. But at the very least you can expect a fresher perspective than anything else you see on the web.

Enjoy! And please hold me to it!

Today's WTF Post

There are no words. I am thoroughly disturbed by this.

OK, ok...I broke my promise already

I said I would blog once a day, but obviously that hasn't happened. So this is me, looking sad at your obvious disappointment and begging for your approval.

I've had a lot on my plate. I was just laid off (my first!) on Friday, and after a weekend of heavy drinking and migraine/tummy ailment fighting, I'm sort-of back to my old self and trying to figure out my next step in life.

The first part of that "figuring out" process begins with another blog I started with a former colleague (I'm not quite ready to let it out into the world just yet). It's a great idea that I just KNOW you'll all love!

The other part was changing the name of this blog. I decided to call it Meiga Mayo (after some great suggestions from friends, including Aliciak and Alex), since it hearkens to my Spanish roots. Meiga is the Gallego word for a witch...not like Angelica Houston in the movie "Witches" but more like Glinda, the good witch of the north from "The Wizard of Oz." The meigas are one of the symbols of Galicia, along with a seashell to represent St. James and his pilgrims. I'm not sure what it means that this area embraces such pagan and Catholic symbols all in the same breath, but life is full of contradictions, isn't it? (I'm not getting into the "catholicism is pagan" argument. Just stop that right now.)

I don't have any great observation today, except that it's snowing a lot and I have precious little time to pack up and move out of my apartment.

But celebrate today, because I have updated this blog twice in seven days. WOOHOO! More to come.

Where have I been? Why, I've always been here.

Some of you are probably going to gag when you read this post. I've been meaning to keep a blog for a few years...as you can see by the dates on any posts older than this one. I've never been a journal writer—I always feared that it would be used as evidence against me.

But that was many years ago, and I've had lots of experiences recently that have forced me to grow up a bit. Now I realize that writing is critical. Writing is honest. And writing is now the best way to connect to people in this digital age.

But Liz, you've said you were going to keep a blog before and you gave up. What makes this attempt any different?

Thanks for that question, voice in my head.

This time is different because I'm different. I'm not that same scared little girl who is afraid for other people to see her thoughts. I'm loud, I'm ready to speak up and I'm looking forward to it.

Here's one thing I promise to you, my readers: You'll get at least one daily post from me, and you'll be entertained. I might be snarky, I might be insightful and I might be downright narcissistic. But it will be authentically Mayo.

Please bear with me while I figure out the focus of this blog. Thanks for joining me on the ride.

Don't Judge me....its been a LONG MONTH!

So much for writing on my blog more often.

A month into my resolutions, and i've got to say, i've stuck to more of them than I was anticipating doing.

I've totally given up coffee - and many people are shocked.

Still haven't touched red meat - and i'm not missing it.

I joined WW two weeks ago, have already lost 2.2 pounds last week, and probably at least another 5 this week. My jeans are fitting much better. I feel like this will be the last time I have to go on this stupid diet - i've finally made smart changes in my life.

Have not been able to stick to a cleaning schedule - but hey - i don't want to die saying 'i should have gone out that one time and not stayed home to clean the living room.'

The short film is going full steam, though the DP we all want has not exactly agreed to the project yet. Slight (major) problem. We are holding auditions saturday!

And...again, have not written on this blog nearly enough.

Odd to notice though, that in giving up coffee - arguably my life force for the past 15 years easily - it has completely, and i mean completely, EFFED my body up. I've become lactose intolerant in a month, i feel yucky, i haven't had a good night's sleep in a few weeks - and I can't get over this cold. WHAT IS THE DEAL? What kind of crack have they gotten me hooked on?

On an entirely separate note - I'm working on a case that is on air right now at my new job about a very young boy who is accused of shooting his grandparents, and his defense is claiming that he was so hopped up on anti-depressants that were prescribed by his doctor that he didn't know what he was doing. I can't help it - every time I see this kid i want to cry. He looks just like my brother, he is my brother's age (they're both 15 now), and he just looks so sad, you know? Like a puppy. A puppy who got into trouble, lured by his owners into a false sense of security.

How can pharmeceutical companies look this kid and his family in the face and say - yeah, we prescribed it to you, but we're not going to take responsibility for your actions as a result of taking this drug - you're on your own. It is heartless. This was a child.

And i'm a huge proponent of the death penalty - an eye for an eye. But justice has to be appropriate. Children are most definitely not adults and should not be treated like one in court. From all the research that i've done - neither side is innocent, but it is wrong to condemn a child who has barely lived his life outside of juvenile detention.

I'll step down from the soap box now.
