An Awesome 2005

OK - since everyone else is blogging off about their new years resolutions - here are mine.

1- Write on my blog more.

2- Make an apartment cleaning schedule (and stick to it!)

3- Go to curves at least three times a week (preferably, tuesday, thursday, and saturday)

4- Possibly spend the $10 a week and go back to WW (sense a pattern here?)

5- Finish the two short films Alex wrote.

6- Go to Europe by July, California for Jan 1, 2006!

7- Get a reasonable sized savings together (well, but if europe and california are in the picture....this one may have to dissapear quietly)

8- Do more things that make ME happy (painting, playing my cello, writing, hanging out with my girls, meditating on all things Disney)

9- Similar to Teresa - I am going to visit my family a bit more often.

10- Spend more quality time with Alex (and i'm sure he knows what I mean by quality time...we're going to watch more movies!!)

Things i'm giving up:

Beef (not taking any more chances. all these mad cow stories are enough)
Coffee (i can hear the gasping now. Seriously, my addiction will be cut in half, if not 3/4. i've found the wonders of tea, and I can use skim milk in it!)
Crappy TV (if i find myself sitting in my livingroom, hitting the button looking for something good to watch after 10 minutes of scanning, i'm going to get up and work on one of my resolutions.)

A mountain to tackle, you say. But I don't think so. I figure these aren't "real" resolutions, cause I thought of them a few days before New Year's. So they hopefully won't be failures.

I've already almost got the entire apartment clean. I've ordered healty food from Fresh Direct (greatest...invention...ever). I'll hopefully be seeing the Aviator with Alex tonight, and I'm posting my first blog of the year.

Nothing like a bout of strep to re-evaluate your life.

Stay Tuned!

What I wish college/high school would have taught me

Sitting at home with my mom sunday night, we were watching Alton Brown's show on Food Network "Good Eats." Topic of the evening was: baking the perfect cookie.

"THATS what they should have taught you in high school," my mother blurts out.

Its true - Alton smoothly explained his way through the science of baking cookies, why mixing liquids and powdered materials separately lead to a better baked cookie, why a different mixer can mean the difference between crap and elegance, I could go on and on.

And I started thinking - what else do I wish I would have been taught in high school or college that I know now, after spending 2 1/2 years in the real world?

1- People (at least in NY) are almost always out to squash you.

2- Everything you read is almost always wrong.

3- Nothing is fair whatsoever

4- Adulthood really and truly sucks. No seriously. I don't think this was fully explained to me.

What about you guys - question of the day ers - what do you wish you would have learned in school and NOT in the real world?

My love and fear for the blog

So i've been neglecting mine for a while. Call it writer's block.

But a lot of other bloggers have NOT been neglecting their blogs.

If you've been paying attention to any type of media, you'll see that there's this huge bruhaha over some documents released re: Bush's military record. And the interesting part of this story is that Bloggers are fueling the reporting of this story.

I think this phenomenon is fabulous. After working for big media for a couple of years (as a researcher even) I think making the people responsible for the news they read is an awesome celebration of the concept of freedom of the press. Similar to the way the major music lables had a hold on music until Napster came along, Blogs are quickly destroying the conventional method of acquiring news, analysis, and good old information.

However, I have a fear. I fear blogs are young, and their impact is vast. This kind of analysis has no way of leaving a trace, leaving its history. There are no buildings full of archival issues. Unless someone prints out every post and everything connected to it, there is no easy way to ever retrieve this information again. If we ever lose the ability to go online, the ability to email, the ability to network, the ability to have electricity at our beck and call, we will lose this critical moment in news publishing history.

And not only to document what is true, but to document what may not be true. This morning, I watched this flash presentation about what happened to the plane that flew in to the Pentagon on 9.11. It basically lays information at the doorstep of the theory that the US government flew a missile into the Pentagon, that it was no plane. It lays "supporting" quotes to the claim, quoted from various news reports.

I do vaguely remember hearing about this while i was working at CNN, and in the months immediately following the attack, the same way I remember hearing on the radio the morning of 9.11 that Fort Knox was hit, that the Golden Gate Bridge was hit. Now, this may be a legitimate piece of reporting. At the moment, I refuse to believe that the government blew up the Pentagon. (for people who are freaked out by this trailer as i was, here's SNOPES version) However, there will be no record of it. It is only in this intangible form on the internet. I think it would be great for people to see this, or see more material like this, to dig deeper into this dialectic that otherwise we would never be participating in.

There will be no headlines to hold up, no paper to point to. I sometimes imagine the aliens that will visit this planet years after we have destroyed ourselves. I imagine them walking into cities to find homes destroyed, buildings demolished. But like every good imaginary alien scene, they will stumble upon scraps of newspaper that tumble down the street, giving away the "Annihilation!" or "DOOM!" that comes before a civilization is destroyed.

Yes, the same could be said for television. If we don't have a player, tv, AND electricity, all that stuff is meaningless. But i feel like what Blogging is onto is bigger than televsion.

It is truly democratic broadcasting.

So, I'm going to think about this for the next few weeks - about a way to record the blather that myself, my friends, and my colleagues dump onto this vast network on a daily/weekly basis. (or monthly, as i've been lately)

Question of the day: Have any ideas about how to make this blog thing more real? Or does it need to be?

Don't yell at me! I've been SO busy

I promised you cyberspace readers fun, and I've failed.

I have not posted in almost one week.

I have no excuse. I've been lazy, tired, bored, anxious, antsy, etc etc.

And nothing exciting has happened to me in a week. Well one thing - i have a GMAIL account. Booya. And its not for sale. Like my aol address, I'll probably have it forever. (and you have to email me to get it - i'm going to try and make it a spam-free account.)

SO - since i'm completely unoriginal, i'm going to copy Alex and Teresa AGAIN and answer this dandy little questionaire that was emailed out earlier today

I'm sure that there have been plenty of "get to know me" -style questionnaires in the history of mankind, but the earliest famous one that I know of is the "Proust Questionnaire", of which there are two versions. Neither of them were written by Proust, but rather were made well-known because his answers somehow were saved and later published. The first one he answered at a party at age 13...It is depressing to think what the average 13-year-old now would come up with if faced with this "party game".

Optically Violated

I can't bring myself to write a really thought provoking blog.

I just finished watching most of "City of God."

I'm thoroughly traumatized.

You already got the story of the day.

Question of the day: What movie most traumatized you? As an adult (as a child is too easy - i want to know who's been messed up in the head recently by a movie?)

Tuesday, August 31, 2004

I think I've already found the story of the day

A dog gave birth to a kitten in Cambodia.

I have nothing intelligent to say on that. I'm just going to let that one stand.

"A SAD STATE", or "Dispach from as close to the convention as I can get without a special pass..."

I walked down by the convention site (remember when it was just "the Garden?"), and I was really sad to see how much of a ghost town it was. I felt i had to visit the area - to see the farse. (If I had still been working at my job, I would not have been agle to go. I would still be sitting at my desk - maybe even now at 10:30pm). It reminded me a lot of how it was during the blackout. Sure there was electricity. But there was something about creating order out of an underlying desire for chaos that was eerily similiar.

The poor delegates. They stuck out in the crowd like a 6th finger on somone's hand; it was perversely creepy. Older men walked around in tweed and slick white hair. The young girls, no doubt the daughters of the delegates, roam the streets of Manhattan in their akward, skinny bodies trying to catch a sneak of P. Diddy while their dads rally for a ban on abortion. The up-and-coming "Future Halliburton CEO's of America" wanna be's that can't be over 22 who walk with a swagger, giggling for girls. There are older women from out of town too, the ones that remind me of my grandmother in Iowa, with perfectly hairsprayed hair, ready to serve me some potato salad, or a fresh pastry.

See, I can pin it, because I know these types. They're the other half of my family - the ones stuck in Iowa.

NOW i know why the Republicans sent their delegates to NY this year.

It is because the kind of people who come from Iowa or Nebraska or Oklahoma who are Bush supporters have one goal in life. And that one goal is to visit New York at least once. My cousin came here a year ago for a choral performance at Carnegie Hall. She was the talk of the town for months. All they can talk about is "what is it like to live/work/play in NY? It must really suck to visit us here in Iowa. Can we come back with you?"

Bush is making their dreams come true. This convention is about blinding people from the truth with a sparkling penny.

The most interesting party of my night was listening to some guy on the subway home, playing a wooden flute and a guitar at the same time.

I couldn't recognize the song, but it was authentic.

*******************************************************

Day 1 out of my job - and I'm liking writing more and more. I've never written so much. It is almost like I can't type fast enough.

Why have I denied myself for so long? WHY??????

I think i need to force my tooshie in somewhere for a writing job. SO, i have no experience. Whatever.

Anyone want to hire a newbie writer?

STORY OF THE DAY: It was going to be the story about a guy who lived for 8 years thinking he had HIV, just to find out recently that he DID NOT. If ever there was an argument for a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh opinion from a doctor until one is sure that one has whatever disease, this is it.

But I've changed it to this woman who spent her last $2 and won $18 million.

Dreams can come true.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What is the passion you feel like you're neglecting?

Ethnisticity

So - my last day at my job.

Some of y'all that got my last email might be seeing this, most of you probably aren't.

I will be uploading more often though - updating everyone about my progress with all the projects i'm dreaming of accomplishing. So as my first message says....stay tuned.

The title of today's post comes from Alicia Keyes' "moving" tribute to Ray Charles. I can't believe a writer wrote this word in her prompter - she had to have made this one up on her own. Maybe she felt more street - but Alex and I couldn't stop laughing.

I wonder what other words would have been butchered by rap/hip hop/pop stars:

Raciality
Discriminiationism
Rhetoricality

Watching the VMA's - i have suddenly felt my age in relation to MTV's general audience. I now realize i'm not part of the "MTV" generation anymore. I mean, I'll always be a part of what it meant when i was younger - but i've officially outgrown most of their programming. Except for Newlyweds (which is almost over, no?) I have no reason to watch. Totally only recognized one video in the viewer's choice category.

I can acknowledge however that the best thing Christina Aguilera ever did for her career was to clean the hell up.

The protest today was pretty amazing. My favorite RNC poster today: "I peed on the Bush's"

Story of the day: chocolate is good for you! I'd like to say "A-Duh"

Question of the day: Lindsay Lohan or Hilary Duff?

Brave new mayo world

Had my second to last day at work today. It is a weird feeling. I've never had an opportunity to EXPLORE things before. Like NEVER. It was always, school school school, work, school, work, school, work, work, work, work. Its an odd feeling. Security without the security.

I digress.

Story of the day: The Hempstead shirt story out of Georgia.

Big up to Long Island - the marijuana island.

There are no words for the ridiculousness of this world sometimes.

OK, second story of the day - some school in maine is banning any food with nuts or beans from being sold OR brought from home. This includes fruits like apricots and anything that would be found in any ordinary vending machine.
I'm going to take a stand here and say that sometimes political correctness and activism and all that crap goes too far. Clearly, this child should not be in a public school. And there is nothing wrong with that. The town should be focusing on placing this kid in a place where he would be aok. This doesn't mean that no one should be bothered or asked to change their activities for the good of the population. NO. But there is a point when people (ie, school officials in both these stories) just get so looney that they lose common sense. Maybe it's a fear of a lawsuit, maybe it is a lack of folo through thought. Why would they force him into public school? Why take the chance that someone could BREATHE on this mystery kid the wrong way and he could die? Why would a parent take that chance? Cause they want him to have a normal childhood? A normal childhood would be one where he DIDN'T DIE. We have progressed as a society to the point that we have like 15 different types of toilet paper for however you like to wipe your ass...but they can't put this anonymous kid in a school that he'll be safe in?

I think I'm tired of people not standing up for themselves, or things they care about, or things they question. The above story had not gone to a board for a vote. But I don't think that would have mattered. Everyone's so scared of offending anyone. Everyone's afraid of sounding "insensitive." I think its way more insensitive to expect a kid to fend for himself and depend on the actions of hundreds of other people for his well being.

Not to MENTION the point alex just brought up - that the world is cruel. The world doesn't bend to your wishes. Personally, I fell UP the stairs on the subway and AT Subway in one day. Do you think one person asked if I was ok? I was bleeding, on the floor, both times. NOT ONE PERSON came by to help me up. I couldn't walk without training for a few days. Don't people realize that the sooner their children realize this world is cruel, the better they will be?

Ok, i'm off the soap box for now.

On to happier matters.

New thing of the day - My friend TERESA and i have come up with an ingenius party (wait, stop me if you've done this before).

We're going to have a "return to childhood" sleep-over.

We're going to have a sleepover where we will bring over sleeping bags, do each other's hair, get the "Peewee's playhouse" box set (whenever it comes out), or maybe Fraggle Rock, or even Muppet Babies or Garfield, get some crayola crayons and coloring books, get our Jem/Barbie/Cabbage Patch/Rainbow Brite/Strawberry Shortcake/etc etc memorabilia, put on some Debbie Gibson/Milli Vanilli/Tiffany/Good Michael Jackson/MC Hammer/The Cure/Aerosmith jams, unearth some "Girl Talk", snap bracelets, bubble neclaces, Fun Dip, ring pops, and more, and get in our pajamas and have our very own "I love the 80's/early 90's" sleepover experience.

We were so giddy on the phone talking about it we couldn't stop yelling out things we have to include.

Question of the day: What do you miss most about your childhood? Material or emotional?

Need Donation of Different Movie Titles

I'm writing a short movie, and for this movie, i need some of the greatest or lamest movie titles for imaginary movies anyone can come up with.

And...if i end up using them, I'll put your name in the credits.

IE - one i came up with "Devil's Food" - a lame rip off of "From Dusk till Dawn"

Does that make sense?

Here are a list of some of my new goals in life

OK - this will make your day.

I may be the last person on the internet to find this, but it Hi-Larious. OFFICE SPACE WARS - Robin and Alex will especially appreciate this. You can guess what it is from the title. It's truly genius.

Ok - story of the day -

Accoring to the New Scientist, an asteroid passed quite close to the earth... back in March, and we are only learning about it now. And not even close, but "exceptionally close."

Hello people - (1) what kind of lame scientists hold this information from the public? According to the article, astronomers posted their findings on some random Harvard website so other people could "observe" gravity potentially pulling it into our atmosphere and destroying human existence. And (2) if some large hurtling rock really was coming our way, we'd never know it until it crashed, would we? I mean, its comforting in a way, but still - for all the technology and satellite imagery and whatever...why aren't we getting this info sooner?

Back in February 04, I remember this story on the BBC that we were "almost" put on an impact alert a month earlier. The 30m rock had a ONE IN FOUR CHANCE OF HITTING THE EARTH in 36 hours. Mind you , this was all happening at the same time Bush was going to announce his plan for space exploration. I mean, what will it take for this country to realize that the UNIVERSE doesn't want Bush in office?

Due to the news of this recent near-miss, I have decided to map out my goals in short periods of time instead of across a lifetime. Cause who knows when the rock will hit...

And because I am one of those people that needs a list of things before I can complete them, here it is - what I hope to do before Jan 1, 2005

1- Finish the short I'm working on - and produce it
2- Finish novel about Lisa's life and push the crap out of it
3- Watch less MTV
4- Beat "Kingdom Hearts"

I have confidence that I will complete them all (even the MTV part)
*%$*%$*%$*%$*%$*%$

One thing I did this morning was troll through some of the blogs that follow mine, in whatever order "Blogger" decided we should all be in. A whole lot of people are from Singapore, which I find really interesting. Another theme that permeated almost all the sites that weren't "I love David D forever" sites... was the "I'm out of my mind and i'm using this blog to document my insanity" theme. What is it that compels one to broadcast one's inner thoughts - as "crazy" or "mundane" they may be?

What i also liked was the fact that everyone has interesting pictures. But since i haven't figured that part out yet, you'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Question of the day - If you could die and come back as any Hip Hop performer, who would it be and why?

The end of day one of my new blog

I think this has grown tiresome. Not even 12 hours with this thing...and i'm a bit overwhelmed at having to fill up cyberspace.

But no Liz, my inner voice says. This is a way for other people to really know what goes on in that brain of yours. A way to shed light on the cracked out things you think but don't get a chance to say.

Ok, Ok, now its my MISSION to write on this thing daily....if it really matters to anyone. And as my boyf so eloquently put it..."the blog really is the final nail in history"...meaning there is no history anymore. History has become too easily deletable, too easily erasable....too quick to forget.

Sigh

What I will say...at 11pm on a monday night...is that there will be some interesting times on this board. Since I feel I don't express myself fully in everyday life, I'm making a pact to myself to be totally honest on this piece of plastic...wait, its not even plastic. Your computer is plastic. But what the heck am I writing on? Maybe "honest on this code string of 0's and 1's"...and yet typed out that somehow diminishes the significance of my writing to all you good people that are spending 5 minutes of your day with me, right here....as i spill my brains out.

Anyway, what you can expect is my voice. There will be some happy moments, some sad moments, some inbetween moments. But hopefully, in the end, you will enjoy

MAYO'S HOUSE O' FUN!

The Beginning

Its a start - but this will be my blog. Stay tuned for updates!
